MS BAnDS students earn recognition at national conference

Thursday, September 29, 2022

Three Oklahoma State University business analytics students presented their papers at the Western Users of SAS Software (WUSS) educational conference and forum held in San Francisco in September.

WUSS is a non-profit organization which provides SAS® software users a place to exchange ideas, educate, train and network. Their annual conference hosts 500 users from the Western region of the United States and beyond.

The conference called for papers showcasing the usage of SAS software in diverse fields and positions. Kodjo Botchway, second-year MS BAnDS student, presented on Evaluating CO2 storage potential of SECARB Offshore Reservoirs and Saline Formations by Employing Data-driven Models with SAS® Viya software. Second-year MS BAnDS student Gowtham Bhupathiraju gave his presentation on Data mining for the online retail industry: Customer segmentation and assessment of customers using RFM and k-means. Chhavi Nijhawan, also a second-year MS BAnDS student, presented her paper, Analysis of Chemicals in Beauty Products and its Impact on Consumers.

“The WUSS Conference, being the first in-person conference held in the last three years was nothing short of amazing,” said Botchway. “It was incredibly wonderful to meet and connect with brilliant minds from SAS® and other pharmaceutical institutions and hear about their interesting research, developments and applications. It is not on every regular Friday you get to meet someone as well-known as Ark Carpenter. Special thanks to the chair Lisa Mendez for organizing this event so well.”

After the conference, awards for papers are given in various categories. Botchway’s paper was recognized as the Best Paper in Analytics and Statistics. Bhupathiraju’s paper won best paper in the Open Source category.

“I am very proud of our student’s achievements in this conference,” said Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, SAS Professor of Marketing Analytics and director of the MS in Business Analytics and Data Science program. “Winning two awards by students is a testament to the strength of our program curriculum, our dedicated faculty and our hard-working students.”
