Two teams of Oklahoma State University master’s in business analytics and data science (MS BAnDS) students recently finished in the top five at the Wharton Case Competition hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

The SFFR Analytics team of Shreyan Datta Chakraborty, Ritwik Roy Chowdhury, Roe Djer Tan and Frankle Muchahary finished third in the competition, while the Go Pokes team of Asif Syed, Shubhi Gupta, Vishwesh Purohit and Ranjith Kumar Kuppu Rathinam was also named as one of five finalists in the competition.

“This is a global case competition with many prestigious universities across the globe vying for honor,” said Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, director of the MS BAnDS program. “It’s tough to get just one team to finish in the top-5. I am delighted that we had two teams in the top-5 and one of our teams finished 3rd in this prestigious case competition. This is a testament of the quality of our students, their hard work and the dedication of our faculty who educate and motivate them.”

The Wharton Case Competition partnered with Plastarc, a social science-based workplace consultancy providing unique insights that promote healthier and higher-performing spaces, to challenge teams from around the globe to analyze data and create analytics-driven solutions to real-world problems.

“The Wharton People Analytics Case Competition was a fantastic experience in trying to understand employee preferences across various organizations,” Shreyan said. “The idea was always to have a people-centric approach led by data-driven decisions to ensure a better quality of work environment. A huge shout out to the team (Ritwik Roy Chowdhury, Frankle Muchahary, and Roe Djer Tan) without whom this would not have been possible. This was the third case competition as a team where we qualified for the final round.”

Chowdhury stressed the importance the faculty advisors play in the performance of the team. “Our professors have always stressed the importance of creating a real-world impact through our analyses, which is precisely what we aimed for in this competition. Thanks to the relentless encouragement and support from Dr. Chakraborty and Dr. Venu Gopal Lolla, we worked hard to meet the competition's expectations. They have consistently motivated us to participate in competitions like this to enhance our learning, asserting that it's one of the best ways to immerse ourselves in the world of analytics, and we definitely feel so. Having the opportunity to present to veterans in the industry and securing a spot on the podium has been an incredible experience!”
