MBAA president Natalie Friend taking position to new heights

Master of Business Administration Association president, Natalie Friend approached her role with a clear vision, intentional leadership and a commitment to leaving a lasting mark on the program. Originally from Keller, Texas, with an undergraduate background in marketing and management, Friend’s journey into leadership echoed a goal she had been building toward for years.

“Earning an MBA has been my top personal and professional goal,” Friend said, who is expected to graduate in May.

That long-standing ambition, combined with her admiration for the Spears School of Business, ultimately led her to pursue a leadership role within the MBA Association. It wasn’t simply participation she was after, but rather, making a true impact.

“I was excited by the opportunity to create my own impact and leave a legacy in the MBA program,” Friend said.

Inspired by past MBAA presidents she had met during her undergraduate years, she stepped into the presidency determined to both honor and build upon their example. From day one, Friend focused on structure, accountability and vision. She motivated her executive team by ensuring everyone understood their shared goal, which was to leave the program better than they found it.

Through weekly meetings, clear expectations, and consistent communication the MBAA executive team fostered a culture of accountability and progress. At the same time, she empowered each team member to take ownership of their role and believe that the small things add up to create a big impact.

Under her leadership, the MBAA set out to increase student awareness, strengthen funding, build meaningful relationships and improve operations of each initiative. By the end of her term, every major goal had been achieved, including foundational changes that benefit both current and future cohorts. Most notably, the team successfully grew its budget and restructured the executive team.

Friend also spearheaded initiatives that extended beyond campus. Through a growing partnership with The Eddie Sutton Foundation and OSU Cowboys vs. Cancer, the MBAA organized events such as a toy drive and Homecoming involvement, creating opportunities for students to actively contribute the community.

“It’s amazing to see how much we’ve been able to give back,” she said.

While the results were significant, the journey was not without its challenges. Reflecting on her first semester as president, Friend acknowledged the intensity of the role.

“No amount of preparation can really get you ready for how chaotic it is,” she said.

Initially focused heavily on execution and results, she later recognized the importance of balance for herself and her team.

“I realized it was just as important for our team to enjoy our time together and grow as friends,” Friend said.

By the spring semester, she shifted her approach to prioritize team connection, morale and open feedback. This change not only strengthened relationships within the team but also improved overall engagement and productivity.

One of the most defining aspects of Friend’s presidency has been her emphasis on continuity. Rather than treating the role as a one-year term, she focused on building systems and initiatives that future teams can expand.

“We want to start something that future teams can build on,” she said. “We’re just the beginning.”

This forward-thinking mindset is already shaping the MBAA’s trajectory. From increasing student awareness to encouraging more involvement across cohorts, efforts have created momentum that will carry into future years.

Her impact is also reflected in the people around her. She credits her executive team as a central part of the MBAA’s success, noting their accountability, motivation, and collaboration. Faculty and alumni also played a key role, providing mentorship and continuity that helped guide the team’s initiatives.

“This experience has been incredible and has enhanced my MBA journey in ways I’ll never forget,” Friend said. “I’ve grown both personally and professionally, and this experience has played a big role in shaping me into the leader I am today.”

Through her leadership, Friend has not only elevated the MBA Association but has set a new standard for what it means to lead with purpose, vision and lasting impact.
