Spears Business Alum makes $95,000 directly after graduating

Ever wonder what you can do with a degree in entrepreneurship? The possibilities are endless and Cameron Shelton, an Oklahoma City native and recent Spears School of Business graduate, is proof. He is currently traveling the country educating health care workers on IT software and making $95,000 a year…and he just graduated! We wanted to learn more about his career journey and his advice for others. See what he has to say below.

What was your major and what made you choose it?
My major was entrepreneurship. I decided to be a part of Spears School of Business because of the leadership in my family. I watched my parents start a lawn care business from the ground up even when times were extremely difficult. They taught me how to be a leader and love whatever I set forth to do. My overall end goal in life will be starting my own small successful business to have within my family for future generations and giving back to the community I grew up in. Also, possibly starting a minority business scholarship at OSU. 

Are there any Spears Business faculty who had a significant impact on your education? If so, how?
Dr. (Jonathan) Butler was my entrepreneurship professor. I believe he had a significant impact on my education. He was always honest with me and made me find the real entrepreneurial spirit I was always capable of. I also wanted to shout out my advisor, Terry Connor, for always being fully available to support me and give me advice no matter what random time I reached out to him.

Where do you work and what do you do?
I’m contracted through the company Judge Group and work for a dialysis company, a large dialysis company with locations across the United States. I’m a EHR implementation specialist and runway lead, which means I’m responsible for implementation, configuration and training of practice operations for a game changing electronic medical records software.  I have been with the company since I graduated in May 2022.

What do you love about your job?
I love traveling across the United States and training nurses, techs, facility administrators, dietitians and social workers on the new IT software. 

What advice would you give to current students wanting to purse a similar career?
The best advice would be to stay focused on your bigger goals in life and never feel like they aren’t reachable. Make smaller goals along the way that help you accomplish your overall goals. Always stay positive daily even when you have a bad day. 

Did you feel like your education at OSU effectively prepared you for your career?
I feel like OSU prepared me for more than just a career. OSU prepared me to have a successful life.
