A team of five Oklahoma State University business analytics master’s degree students recently won first place in the MS in Business Analytics and Data Science (MS BAnDS) program case competition at the Spears School of Business.

The Avant Garde team of Tejaswi Maruthi, Pankaj Suresh Kumar, Ayush Mohan, Kalbe Abbas Agharia and Hayden Myers placed first in the case competition. The winning team, selected by judges made up of industry representatives on the program’s advisory board, received a $1,250 cash prize. Mohan was selected as the best presenter.

“The business analytics case competition is an integral part of our MS BAnDS curriculum,” said Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, SAS Professor of Marketing Analytics and director of the MS in Business Analytics and Data Science program. “First-year students work as teams analyzing business issues, crunching the numbers, creating appropriate visualizations and models and then present their results to judges. The first-round judges are alums who graduated from our program and currently working in various industries. The final round judges are high-level executives from companies on our corporate advisory board.”

Finishing second was the Asgardians team of Srishti Srivastava, Kalpesh Mulye, Cade Phelan and Bhakti Saoji. In third place were the Outliers, consisting of Amartya Mitra, Tanushree Ghosh, Palash Gupta and Kaiser Cleburn. Placing fourth was the Curiosity team of Rafae Abdullah, Hadley Nixon, Meghana Singam and Prathamesh Kulkarni.

Cleburn and Mulye tied for the best question-and-answer award.

Judges for the competition were Brian Bickell (InterWorks), Ashley Gockstetter (Love’s), Brian Griffin (Paycom) and William Devinney (Bank of Oklahoma).
