MS-BAnDS case competition winners

Oklahoma State’s Business Analytics and Data Science (BAnDS) program held its annual case competition Oct. 30. Fifteen teams of the program’s graduate students competed against each other using a case featuring an international hotel chain.

The case competition was launched Oct. 16 and students had one week to finalize their presentations before presenting virtually to a panel of three judges. The presentations were given on Oct. 23 with each team given a 20-minute maximum presentation time, followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer session.

Upon completion of the first round, a dozen teams were cut from the field. The judges selected three teams to move to the placement round of competition, Team 5, Team 6 and Team 8.

The placement round took place Oct. 30 using the same three-judge and 20-minute presentation time format. After deliberation, the judges selected Team 8 as the winner of the 2020 OSU BAnDS Case Competition.

“Analytics case competitions are integral part of the MS BAnDS curriculum,” said Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, SAS Professor of Marketing Analytics and director of the MS in Business Analytics and Data Science program. “It allows our students to show their analytical, visualizations and presentation skills in the context of a comprehensive business case in front of expert judges from the industry.””

A drawing of the top three teams will take place before future case competitions to determine who will represent OSU on the national stage. The competitions each team will attend is still unclear due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, previous events OSU has competed in are the University of Iowa Graduate Business Analytics Case Competition, the University of Tennessee Knoxville Hanes Analytics Case Competition and the Wake Forest University Graduate Business Analytics Case Competition.

The results and rosters for the teams that placed are:

First place, Team 8: Kalyan Alisetty, Britton Firth, Tonmoy Ananda Paul, Anirud Reddy Vem

Second place, Team 6: Brittany Hickerson, Max Griffin, Aayushya Gupta, Loksagar Subramanyam

Third place, Team 5: Nithisha Katta, John Moss, Rushya Puttam, Jacob Thorley
