Background

Our January Undergraduate Global Student of the Month is Juan Diego Castro from Costa Rica! Juan is a marketing major and is part of the cross-country team. Costa Rica is in Central America. Costa Ricans tend to be a friendly and outgoing culture, but we asked Juan to describe the Costa Rican culture in his own words. 

 

“We love to interact with people from different parts of the world that come to our country and help them to have a fun time. As Costa Ricans we also love to have a good cup of coffee, watch soccer games, go to the beach, and spend a lot of time with friends and family. We are known worldwide as “Ticos”, and also famous for our common saying “Pura Vida”! We are also a very peaceful country.” 

 

Interesting fact, Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world that doesn’t have an army.  

 

Juan came to the US for the first time in August of 2018 when he arrived in Stillwater to begin his first semester.  

 

“I chose OSU because it is the place that really believed in my capacities as an athlete as well as a student. The competitive environment was also one of the main reasons I felt this was the right place for me. Here I was able to find a lot of people who want to improve themselves every day, and that encourages me to do the same.”

 

Experience at OSU 

 

Being a part of the cross-country team at OSU has been one of the most important and life-changing experiences for Juan.  

 

“The people on the team are incredible, and their hard work and dedication really inspires me and makes me feel proud of being part of the OSU family. The Cowboy spirit is hard to find anywhere else. We believe in what we do and say and that creates an awesome community to be in.”

 

Hobbies

 

Juan’s main hobby is, of course, running! He spends most of his time training which has paid off many times. Juan won fourth place out of 40 at a World U18 Championship in Kenya in 2017. When he is not running Juan loves to spend his time reading books and listening to podcasts about personal development.  

 

“I find it really interesting to learn about the habits and beliefs of successful people.”  

 

After graduation Juan hopes to become a professional track runner for a known brand while also holding a part-time job in digital marketing either in content marketing or marketing analytics.
