Undergraduate Global Student of the Month

Background

Our Undergraduate Global Student of the Month is Alex Moreau. A native of France, Alex is currently a Human Resource Management Major graduating in December!

Alex grew up 45 minutes from the beach, in a small town of roughly 3,000 people near Montpellier in Southern France. The weather is similar to that of California, dry and very warm summers. Something Alex finds interesting about southern France is the number of castles. He notes, most towns have at least one castle nearby, no matter the size or the population. He also highlights the number of vineyards in the area he lives in and how the wine culture is very present. Since the Mediterranean Sea is not far from where Alex grew up he and his family enjoy a wide variety of seafood dishes.

“There is a specialty called “tielle sétoise”, it is a kind of pie with seafood inside. At first it looks weird and scary, but once you try it, you realize how delicious it is. Additionally, we usually eat differently than Americans. Most meals will have at least 3 courses, sometimes more. For example, during Christmas and New Year, we usually eat 6 courses, and a dinner can last 4 hours.”

Alex first visited the US in 2012 for the first time. He visited California and Florida. After beginning his college career in France, he was able to spend two summers in Florida working at Walt Disney World.

“After starting college in France, I knew I wanted to come to the US to study and live. After two years in France, I went to Canada for a one-year exchange program at Bishop’s University. I then decided to transfer to Oklahoma State University to complete my Bachelors in Human Resource Management.”

Experience at OSU

The Human Resource Management option at Spears Business as well as the small college-town atmosphere of Stillwater made choosing OSU an easy decision for Alex.

“I also wanted to experience a culture that was very different than mine, and it is indeed very different. The people at OSU are really amazing and I am so glad I decided to come here.”

Alex currently serves as the President of the Human Resource Management Association (HRMA at OSU). HRMA has moved to online meetings, however Alex and his team have continued to provide opportunities for members to network and grow through guest speakers providing real-life examples of human resource experience.

“I think what makes me stand out as an international student is the culture I bring. I have had the chance to study in three different countries France, Canada, and the US and work with people coming from all over the world, which has made me understand the importance of diversity and inclusion. Meeting people from other cultures helped me grow as a person for the better, and I am now able to share my culture in the US.”

After graduation, Alex has his sights set on Colorado and has been offered a position with Amazon.

Hobbies

Alex loves cooking, sending time with his wife and their cat, and traveling.

“Now that I am in the US, there are so many states and places that I am looking forward to visiting. I also love to cook, especially baking. I actually learned to make French Bread over the summer because I missed it too much.”

Alex enjoys visiting new restaurants and trying new food in the US. He also has a rock and elephant sculpture collection from all the places he and his family have traveled throughout the years. His favorite rock is a desert rose from Morocco.

We are thankful Alex chose Spears Business and happy to award him with our Undergraduate Global Student of the Month title for November! Congratulations Alex!
