Celebrating Spears

Spears Business faculty continue to receive recognition for their teaching and research. Here are a few members of the school’s faculty to recently be honored, and also a special recognition for OSU’s new Business Building.

Robert Baron

Robert Baron

Widely respected as a leading scholar in cognitive and social factors in entrepreneurship, Baron

was recently recognized as one of the “World’s Most Impactful Entrepreneurship Researchers” in the Journal of Small Business Management. The honor is based on the number of citations attributed, which revealed Baron at No. 2 overall following a tabulation of publications in entrepreneurship journals.

Baron also received another honor when he was designated, from a list of more than 16,000, as one of the 100 most influential management authors in an article in the Academy of Management Learning and Education. The analysis in forming the list was based on the impact of scholarly work on students.

“You keep at it long enough, and you do fairly good work and it’s cumulative,” Baron said in downplaying the recognition.

His peers at Spears, however, would have none of that. “A big congratulations to Robert Baron,” said Bruce Barringer, head of the School of Entrepreneurship.

Dan Rickman

Dan Rickman

Rickman was named this summer a Fellow of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI). On faculty at OSU since 1996, Rickman is a Regents Professor and has received the Regents Distinguished Research Award.

“To be included with the list of luminaries of regional science that I studied as a young scholar is the greatest honor of my career,” said Rickman, who is one of only 85 recipients of this prestigious award.

He will receive his award in November at the 2018 annual meeting of the North American Regional Science Council (a supranational section of RSAI) in San Antonio.

Fellows of RSAI are distinguished scholars with a proven and recognized research record in the field of regional science during a considerable part of their scientific career. The RSAI fellowship is a world-wide sign of scientific recognition that is bestowed on a regional scientist with outstanding research credentials in their field.

Angela Spencer

Angela Spencer

The OSU associate professor of accounting is the recipient of a national teaching award presented annually by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA).

Spencer and three co-authors from across the United States were recognized with the 2017 Mark Chain/FSA Teaching Innovation Award presented annually to recognize exceptional graduate accounting course practices. The OSU faculty member and her colleagues submitted their case at the 2017 American Accounting Association annual meeting and were recognized in August.

“Angela is an innovative accounting educator who inspires students and instills a love of learning in them,” said Audrey Gramling, head of the OSU School of Accounting. “She is a key player in our mission to build the future of accounting at OSU.”

Spencer and her colleagues were presented the award at the 2018 American Accounting Association Conference on Teaching and Learning in Accounting (CTLA), where they received an AICPA-funded award totaling $2,500. She also was asked to present at the conference in Washington, D.C., where more than 3,000 accounting faculty from across the world were meeting.

New Business Building Recognized

OSU’s new Business Building has drawn rave reviews since opening in January, and now the state-of-the-art facility is being recognized as one of the five-state region’s best new projects.

Built by Manhattan Construction Company, the new OSU Business Building received the Award of Merit in the Higher Education/Research division of the ENR (Engineering News-Record) Texas and Louisiana’s 2018 Best Project competition. Of the 121 entries received from the states of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Mississippi, the team of judges selected 42 projects across 18 categories as the region’s best.

“We are delighted with our new building and it has exceeded our expectations,” said Ken Eastman, dean of OSU’s Spears School of Business. “It is great to walk in every day and see so many people enjoying all the unique spaces. We are pleased that the building has received this award and it is a testament to the great partnership among Manhattan, Elliott + Associates and OSU that made this such a successful project. Manhattan Construction built it with great care and passion and the results speak for themselves.”

The Award of Merit was presented to Manhattan Construction officials in Houston on Oct. 18, where ENR will also announce the 2018 Project of the Year, honor the 2018 Legacy Award winner and celebrate the 2018 Firms of the Year.
