Accounting Ph.D.

The objective of the Accounting PhD program is to produce high-quality academics that are prepared for successful careers in research, teaching, and professional engagement in a university setting. To achieve this, the program allows students to specialize in the areas of financial accounting, capital markets, auditing, and tax-related research topics, overlaid with an appreciation of global and international issues. The program also provides students with the knowledge and tools needed in the application of archival, behavioral, and analytical research methods. As accounting research has become increasingly interdisciplinary, students are also exposed to research and quantitative methods from the fields of economics, statistics, finance, management information systems, and the behavioral sciences.

The trademark of the PhD in Accounting program at Oklahoma State University is the development of outstanding academic scholars through both personal, academic, and professional growth. We seek students with great research potential, as evidenced by a desire and ability to contribute to the body of accounting literature. Our students also possess excellent interpersonal skills necessary to become top teachers and research colleagues. Many of our students, while certainly not required, also have public and/or industry accounting experience and a professional license, such as the CPA.

The program is small enough for doctoral students to work closely with faculty in a mentoring relationship. The program also encourages doctoral students and faculty to actively work together on research projects that are directed at publication in the top accounting research journals.

In order to increase their network and interact with other academics, students are provided support to attend various academic conferences. Each Spring, the School of Accounting also hosts a research conference designed to bring in top academics from around the region and across the U.S. More information on the conference can be found here:

Most students complete the degree program within four years. By the completing the program, students attain three primary competencies:

  • Research in their chosen area(s) of specialization;
  • Teaching in their chosen area(s) of specialization; and
  • Familiarity in other areas of accounting research to serve as a valuable colleague.
