September 2018 - Graduate

Onkar Mayekar

Background

Our international student of the month for September Onkar Mayekar starts by quoting one of the great American writers “In the words of Mark Twain “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Bearing these thoughts in mind, I landed to OSU to specialize in the field of Data Science. Taking risks, exploring different parts of the world and culture is something which I wanted to do. So to fulfill that, keeping my professional goal in mind, I decided to pursue my Masters in Business Analytics”

Onkar is a full-time Master in Business Analytics student. When talking about his native country Mayekar mentions “Coming from India, a country which is culturally rich, having diverse food habits, traditions, beliefs, social customs, attire, language, and festivals, OSU not only allows me to collaborate with local students but also various cultures from around the world. It has been an excellent experience for me, and I am looking forward to it in my last year at the University.”

When describing the MBAN student, Dr. Ajay Sukhdial mentions “Of all the research and teaching assistant I have had over the years, Onkar is one of the most competent and definitely the most colorful. His enthusiasm for life is contagious.”

Best memories/experiences at OSU

When talking about his favorite’s memories at OSU the grad student comments “Being involved in sports, I have been a part of various on-campus cultural and sports events and have represented India for Basketball and Cricket. Oklahoma State also gave me an opportunity to attend SAS global forum where I volunteered to organize a seminar taken by one the technology stalwart, creator of Hadoop, Doug Cutting. It also gave me an opportunity to network with some amazing professionals, Mr. Ramu Damodaran (Deputy Director for Partnerships and Public Engagement in the United Nations), Mr. Sree Sreenivasen (Former Chief Digital Officer of New York City, and MET) and many more.

Accomplishments and Hobbies

“If I had to pick a hobby to define me, I would say that I am a sportsperson by heart. I also have my fair share of love for Basketball, Cricket and Soccer. I have grown to play racquetball too at OSU and have a passion for Cross Fit workouts. These hobbies drive my assertive personality out when it comes to achieving goals and making better my academic proficiency too. While sports help me to be focused, music relaxes my nerves. I would say that I am an amateur guitar player and have performed at OSU during the Diwali night event showcasing the Indian Culture. In the end, I would say that my parents are a big part of what I am now, would be in the future and always push me to be a better person in life along with the professional goals I achieve.”
