Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University

December 2018 - Graduate

Jo Madrid

Background

Our international student of the month for December is Jo Madrid and she is from Puebla, Mexico. Puebla is a city in east-central Mexico, southeast of Mexico City. It’s known for its culinary history, colonial architecture and cosmopolitan feel. Currently Puebla has become a hub for higher education in the country, having campuses of the top universities in Mexico.

Jo is a full-time master’s in Business Administration student. She graduated as an architect in 2013 and worked for several years with different companies, she later started her own architecture firm with two partners for two years until she decided to begin her graduate studies. She is currently pursuing a double master and will graduate Fall 2018 from OSU with her MBA along with a master’s in Architecture from UPAEP in Puebla, Mexico. Jan Analla, advisor for the MBA program mentions that “Jo has been an outstanding student in the program and a true ambassador for the MBA program and Spears School of Business. She has challenged herself on every level--academically, leadership and service.”

“I grew up in a house surrounded by love, music, books and culture. My dad, born and raised in Puebla met my small-town Oklahoman mother and they had six kids. Because of this, even though I was raised in Mexico, I grew up wearing OSU t-shirts and dreaming of attending the school that my family loves. You could say that orange runs in the family, my grandmother Nellie Perry was honored this year with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Human Science, my dad came from Mexico to get his master’s degree more than 45 years ago and my cousin Karen Hancock is currently assistant coach for the Soccer Cowgirls. Go pokes!”

Best memories/experiences at OSU

When talking about her favorite’s memories at OSU the grad student comments “One of my best memories at OSU was participating in the Remember the 10 Run and seeing how Stillwater truly never forgets. Another memory that I will always cherish was helping in the Coaches vs Cancer Homecoming parade; it was very motivating, and it was an honor to share this special moment with kids fighting cancer and with my classmates.“

Accomplishments and Hobbies

Jo is currently the Vice President for Social Affairs for the MBA Association. Recently her team won first place in the Executive Interaction Case Competition at Spears School of Business. She has worked as a graduate assistant at the CAGLE Study Abroad Office during her time at OSU helping out with international activities and functions, while also participating in the Spring Break Study Abroad trip to Japan in 2018. Dr. Jose Sagarnaga, director of the CAGLE mentions “Besides being an excellent student engaged in academics and within the Spears Business and OSU community, we had been lucky to have Jo Madrid as Graduate Assistant at the CAGLE. Her passion for quality service is contagious and she has helped us to complete several new initiatives and projects successfully. We celebrate her academic achievements and will miss her positive attitude and hard work after she graduates on December 2018.”

When talking about what defines her, Jo talks about her upbringing. “Growing up, my core values and beliefs were molded not only by my parents but my grandparents as well. I was taught to discover and love the differences that every human being has and what makes us unique, that a person’s race, wealth, religion, health, sexual orientation does not define them and that being kind is the biggest strength you can ever have”.
