Michelle Forsland

Background

This month’s International Student of the Month is Michelle Forsland. Michelle is from Kolbotn, Norway. “Hi my name is Michelle Forsland and I am majoring in sports management. I come from Norway, just south of the capital Oslo. The culture in Norway is pretty different from here, so it is safe to say that I had some sort of culture shock when I first moved to the U.S. for college. Norway is a small country with only 5.2 million people. I like that although we are a small country, it is very diverse as well, which I enjoy. I also like that we still have a lot of beautiful nature to explore, and that there is now an increased awareness on preserving this as well. Norwegians are said to be born with skis on their feet because of our climate. I think the different culture is something that makes me stand out from fellow students. I've grown up in a completely different part of the world and spoken a different language for 19 years before I had to adjust to English then starting college. Because I have the experiences from another culture I think I bring a different perspective on things than students here. I also think that something Norwegians in general are said to have, is an incredible work ethic. The way we do things in terms of school, sports or work is something I know is admired throughout the world. This I find pretty amazing, and I like the thought of that even if I am from a small place like Norway it is still possible to make an impact on the world. I have developed a lot of personality traits through golf. It is a sport that requires a lot of patience and hard work. Competition is getting stronger every day, and therefore we need to keep up the workload and preparations. I consider myself very competitive and hardworking because of what I have learned through golf. I also believe very strongly in a few values that I have which are honesty and integrity.”

Best memories/experiences at OSU

Michelle has really enjoyed her time at OSU so far: “I am on the OSU golf team, and it is so far the best decision I have made in my life. OSU has a great school history when it comes to golf, and when I received a full scholarship offer here I had to take it. This is what makes me feel closer to the OSU community. We work endless hours every week to represent the school in the best possible way. We go out and compete proudly with the OSU logo on our chest, and when results are not the way we wanted, we go back home to Stillwater and work even harder for the next competition.”

Accomplishments and Hobbies

Michelle is successful both in the classroom, and on the golf course: “Being a part of the OSU athletic family is something I wouldn't change for the world. It takes hard work to combine school and sports on a D1 level, but at the same time it brings me memories of a lifetime. My days are usually classes before lunch, and then I spend many hours at the golf course in the afternoon, and then go back to school again for homework. So, my days are spent on campus or on the golf course, and luckily, that is exactly where I want to be.” We are proud to have Michelle Forsland as an OSU Cowgirl and this month’s International Student of the Month! Congratulations Michelle!
