Networking: Investment in Your Business

Wednesday, August 5, 2020

Spears Business students visit with mentor Dennis Essary over dinner. The school's Mentorship Program serves more than 200 undergraduate and graduate students.

The Spears School of Business Mentoring Program provides protégés access to experienced mentors who can contribute to their professional and personal development. The program provides a platform for protégés to realize their potential by enabling professional relationships with mentors, who act as role models and provide guidance to them. It offers opportunities to develop business contacts, access industry information, and gain valuable insights from experienced and successful professionals.

The power of networking and generating connections for students within Spears Business is crucial for the development of future success, and the mentoring program is one way to capitalize on it.

Bill Pickering, MBA student, and Matt Daniel, Global Key Account Manager at Hempel, were paired together in fall 2018 when Pickering began his MBA journey, and from there, their relationship flourished.

“We’ve been connected for over a year now and although the formal connection of our mentoring is over, we’ve maintained a connection and it has garnered innumerable benefits,” Pickering said.

One of the greatest takeaways Pickering received from the program was that “you never know what you don’t know until you do,” and that’s exactly what these mentoring connections offer.

Daniel is a firm believer in the mentoring program. He said he feels as though he’s able to give back to the alma mater that gave him so much.

“From the mentor perspective, I’d like to share just how rewarding it has been. You really get to see how well Spears is developing their brand by doing things like this and integrating an alumni participation level,” Daniel said.

“I would encourage students to get involved and make the most of these connections because you never know where it’ll take you or what you can benefit from them,” Pickering said.
