About Us (History of Analytics Programs at OSU)

In Fall 2004, OSU partnered with SAS®, a leading provider of data analysis and data mining software, to offer on-campus graduate students with technical background to earn the SAS® and OSU data mining certificate. The program development was spearheaded by Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, Professor (Marketing).

This flagship program has awarded about 750+ certificates in last 11 years, making it the largest certificate program in data mining in partnership with SAS®. The success of this program can be attributed to the dedication of Dr. Chakraborty and the uniqueness of the program design. Having a background in both engineering and marketing, Dr. Chakraborty wanted the program to appeal to graduate students who are interested in acquiring deep technical and programming knowledge needed to manipulate and analyze large data sets to solve business problems. This is reflected in the curriculum of this program. Students can take courses offered by Marketing, MSIS , Industrial Engineering and Statistics departments at OSU. Students from this program have won numerous awards in data mining and analytics shootouts, presented papers at conferences and won scholarships to attend conferences. In Fall 2007, the graduate certificate in business data mining started for working professionals (via online delivery of classes) with technical background who may not want to pursue a full master’s degree yet want to acquire data mining or predictive analytics or data science skills by taking a series of courses online. In Fall 2014, the flagship program for graduate students with technical background has been expanded to three different levels of SAS® certificates that build on each other. The data mining (basic), the predictive analytics (advanced) and the marketing data science (expert) certificate as explained in the program details page (click here).

In Fall 2014, another new program titled SAS® and OSU Marketing Analytics program has been launched for MBA and other graduate students with non-technical background who wants to learn analytics for making better decisions without doing programming as in the program details page (click here).

In January 2016, the MS in Business Analytics program took the best of all certificate program courses along with other courses from statistics, MIS and Industrial Engineering to create a degree offering. For details of this program, click here.
